Connect to a Virtual Private Network (VPN) Using iOS (iPad)

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection is required to access protected UTRGV resources (e.g., Oracle E-Business, Banner, etc.), from off-campus.

Getting Started

  1. Enroll in Duo Mobile Two-Factor Authentication.
  2. Install the Duo Mobile App on your mobile device.
  3. Install, Configure, and Connect to FortiClient VPN for iOS.
  4. Request Remote Desktop Connection.

1. Enroll in Duo Mobile Two-Factor Authentication 

This is used to confirm authentication to UTRGV resources.

1. Go to utrg.edu/Duo to enroll.

2. Click Start Setup.

NOTE: This step MUST be completed using the UTRGV on-campus network.

3. Select the type of device you want to enroll, then click Continue.

4. Verify ownership of the mobile device being registered.

5. Click the verification method you want to use.

6. Enter the Verification code (6 digits) you receive.

7. Click Continue.

NOTE: If Duo Push (Recommended) is selected, the Duo Mobile app MUST be installed on your mobile device. Once the enrollment process is completed, a message stating enrollment was successful will appear.

2. Install the Duo Mobile App on Your Mobile Device

  1. Download the Duo Mobile app from your mobile device's app store. 
  2. Allow the mobile device you registered to send Push notifications.
  3. Click on the link in the activation text message sent to your phone. 

3. Install, Configure, and Connect FortiClient VPN for iOS

  1. Install the FortiClient app from the App Store and launch it.
  2. Select OK, got it, if presented with a new features window. 
  3. Select Allow at the ForiClient Would Like to Add VPN configuration prompt.
  4. Enter your iPad passcode.
  5. Select Connections, then Add Configuration.
  6. Fill in the following sections:
    1. Name: UTRGV VPN
    2. Host: vpn.utrgv.edu
    3. Port: 443
    4. User: Your full UTRGV email address
    5. Password: Your UTRGV password
  7. Select Done, then select Done again on the next screen.
  8. Select the <VPN option at the top left corner of the screen to see the connections.
  9. Turn UTRGV VPN to the On position.
  10. Accept the Duo Mobile Push.

NOTE: The VPN should now be connected.

4. Request Remote Desktop Connection 

Your office computer MUST be pre-configured for Remote Desktop Connection BEFORE you can access it through VPN from outside the UTRGV on-campus network. To request Remote Desktop Connection, submit an IT Service Request through ServiceNow. Be sure to include your computer's Asset Tag number.
Also, if you travel outside the U.S., request to have your computer accept connections from international locations.
