Road Map to Appraisal Success

Recommended Steps:

Review the appraisal from last year.

Review the employee development plan.
If you haven’t met with your employee(s) since the last appraisal, meet with each to discuss progress and note the date of the meeting.

Quick Notes:

  1. Annual appraisal period is May 1st to April 30th.
  2. Appraisals are due May 1st – May 31st.
  3. If an employee is on approved leave, the applicable appraisal period does not change.

Seek a self-evaluation from employee(s).

Seek and review employee training requests.
Discuss previous goals and previous development plan.

Can't attend scheduled Trainings? HR provides departmental trainings upon request.

Quick Notes:

  1. When completing the biographical information section of the Employee Appraisal Form, do not use nicknames, informal names, or abbreviations.
  2. If an employee was hired by UTRGV after January 15, 2017, then the employee doesn't need an evaluation this cycle (consider a 60 or 90 day evaluation).
  3. If the employee was hired on or before January 15, 2017, but he/she transferred from another UTRGV department, please contact us at hreval@utrgv.edu or at 665-2451.

Incorporate feedback from the reviewer.

Send completed appraisals to hreval@utrgv.edu.

Quick Notes:

  1. When writing appraisals, include sufficient examples to support each rating.
  2. Meet with employees in private with no interruptions & allow sufficient time for discussion.
  3. Attach development plans when submitting appraisals.
  4. Save each file as Lastname_Firstname_EID# sample,"Doe_John_6001111111."
  5. Use the Direct Report Evaluation form and submit it to your department head once completed.
