UTRGV participates in community wellness event, Together For Our Health

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley joined KRGV Channel 5, the Rio Grande Valley Diabetes Association, South Texas Health System, H-E-B and other organizations to host the inaugural Together For Our Health event Sunday, April 2, at the McAllen Convention Center.

Together For Our Health offered health screenings, educational workshops and other activities that address diabetes and various related metabolic disorders.

Dr. Steven A. Lieberman, interim dean of the UTRGV School of Medicine, said the medical school was delighted to collaborate with fellow UTRGV colleges and the community on an event that serves patients as well as health care professionals.

“It’s been wonderful to see UTRGV really step up in so many ways,” Lieberman said. “It’s really remarkable how this has come together. This has been a spectacular effort.”

UTRGV students, faculty and staff came out in full force.

The College of Health Affairs School of Nursing and the Department of Physician Assistant Studies: performed more than 350 free screenings for attendees that included blood sugar and blood pressure levels, and height and weight checks.

The College of Health Affairs and College of Education and P-16 Integration: gave educational presentations.

The College of Fine Arts: provided music and ceramics demonstrations.

The Department of Health and Human Performance in the College of Health Affairs: led Zumba and yoga exercise sessions for all ages.
