Why UTRGV?
I came to UTRGV thinking that I’d finish up my basics then transfer somewhere else. What kept me here was the support from the campus community and all the opportunities that were made available. Ultimately, I ended up finding everything I wanted in a school here and more.

What made you decide on your current major?
I’ve always liked writing and keeping up with the news. I had never met a journalist in my life and wasn’t even too sure what they did, but I decided to go with it anyways. As soon as I started taking classes in my major and got involved with the school newspaper, The Rider, I knew this was what I wanted to do. If it weren’t for people like Dr. Greg Selber, Azenett Cornejo and Bryan Ramos, who were unfortunate enough to edit some of my earliest work, I don’t know if I would’ve had the confidence to stick with it. I once heard journalism described as being “professionally curious,” and that just about sums it up for me.

What are your plans after graduation?
I want to be a reporter somewhere in some capacity. All the other details will figure themselves out.

What are you involved in on and off campus?
I’m a staff writer at the UTRGV office of News and Internal Communications, a freelance writer for the Valley Town Crier and an intern at The Monitor this semester. I’m also the treasurer of the Environmental Awareness Club on campus.

What is your biggest accomplishment to date?
I never thought I would be able to support myself financially through writing at such a young age. I always imagined that I’d have to keep my job as a server throughout college and find the time to gain experience along the way. Right now, I get to do both at the same time and I’m really grateful for that.

What advice do you have for future students?
If you ever feel unconfident, hesitant or scared to do something, that probably means you should do it.
