Consuelo Gomez

Name Consuelo Gomez
Age: 21
Major: Spanish
Hometown: Mission

The reason I chose UTRGV was because it provided all the benefits that I was looking for and planning on during my college career, from scholarships all the way to the perfect degree that fits me the best. UTRGV offered all of these benefits while allowing me to be close to my family.

What made you decide on your current major?
I chose my major because I was really interested in learning and researching more about my language and I literally fell in love with the literature and how it evolved to what we have now. Being able to speak, understand, write and enjoy two languages for me is a great experience full of new opportunities for my future and my goals.  However, I hope to practice my minor in mathematics by becoming a math teacher.

What are your plans after graduation?
I plan to enroll in an alternative education program, get certified to take the teaching state exam, obtain my education certificate and be able to teach, which is what I like to do most. Becoming a teacher has been my goal since I started high school. I would also like to pursue my master’s degree to be a college instructor. After I finish my educational career I would love to get certified in cosmetology.

What are you involved in on and off campus?
I’ve been a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society since 2014 and I am now a member of the Honor at UTRGV. I like to be on top of my studies as well as my hobbies which are playing sports and watching movies. I am also employed as a work-study in the Transfer Center, where I help students in their transition to UTRGV.

What is your biggest accomplishment to date?
My biggest accomplishment is being successful at working and studying at the same time. Soon, it will be graduating from college and being able to teach at all school levels, from kinder to high school.

What advice do you have for future students?
The only advice I have for future students is to enjoy every minute of their college career and stay focused on your vision of what you would like to become when you finish college.  When you think you can’t go anymore or feel like giving up, just remember what your reasons were for starting college and what benefits you will enjoy when you graduate.
