UTRGV Marketing and Communications Earns Awards For Creative Excellence

RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS – MARCH 29, 2017 – UTRGV’s University Marketing and Communications (UMC) picked up a number of local and statewide awards recently for its expertise in writing and photography, marketing/advertising, graphic design, and web and social media.

“These awards reflect the tremendous creativity, teamwork and professionalism of our University Marketing and Communications staff,” said UTRGV Deputy President Dr. Janna Arney. “I am so proud of their winning efforts in portraying the mission, accomplishments and spirit of our great university.”  

UMC received seven awards in March at the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, Southwest District IV (CASE) conference held in Fort Worth, Texas. 

The annual CASE Accolades Awards program showcases best practices in fundraising, alumni relations, public/government relations, advancement services, special events and outstanding communications.

The winning UMC entries – which received one gold, three silver, two bronze and one honorable mention – were among more than 750 submissions from 261 institutions in Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.

THE CASE AWARDS

GOLD

Awarded to the staff of UMC Marketing and Creative Services for the design of seven gonfalons (banners) to represent the seven UTRGV colleges.

3 SILVER

Awarded to Senior Writer Jennifer Berghom, UMC News & Internal Communications staff, for her story documenting the first day of classes for UTRGV’s inaugural cohort medical students.

  • Specialty and Print Advertising Products – Out of Home Media: UTRGV Shuttles

Awarded to the staff of UMC Marketing and Creative Services for the extension of UTRGV’s brand message, “We Will,” to the exterior designs of five UTRGV shuttle buses. 

  • Design – Logos: Bike Share

Awarded to the staff of UMC Marketing and Creative Services for the logo design that visually links the Zagster-UTRGV Bike Sharing Program on signs at 17 bike share sites at three campuses and in several Valley communities

2 BRONZE

  • Photography – Digital or Computer Enhanced Images: That ‘Groove’ Moment

Awarded to Photographer David Pike of the UMC News & Internal Communications staff, for his shot of the university’s high energy chamber ensemble while performing.

  • Digital/Social Media – Campaign: Social Graduation – Solidifying Bonds and Enhancing the Commencement Experience via Social Media

Awarded to the UMC Public Relations staff for a campaign to engage students in the graduation experience by employing Facebook 360 videos and photos, a unifying tracking hashtag, live streaming, Facebook event pages, drone photography, LinkedIn profile updates, social ads and Twitter graduation messages.

HONORABLE MENTION

  • Color Photography – Campus Environment: When Dinosaurs Roamed … the Campus?

Awarded to Photographer David Pike of the UMC News & Internal Communications staff, for his photo used to promote the return to campus of the highly popular exhibit “Sue,” a full-scale replica of Tyrannosaurus rex.

ADDY AWARDS

In February 2017, UMC’s Marketing and Creative Services, also known as The Studio at UTRGV, won nine honors for creative excellence at the American Advertising Federation (AAF) - Rio Grande Valley awards competition.

The annual ADDY awards competition recognizes creative excellence in local media, including print, broadcast, interactive, out of home and public service. The ADDYs is the advertising industry’s largest and most representative competition, attracting more than 40,000 entries every year in local AAF Club competitions.

The Studio at UTRGV picked up two Best of Show awards, three Gold ADDYs, and four Silver ADDYS for creative work ranging from logo design to full-scale advertising campaigns. The Best of Show awards are determined from all entries winning gold in the various categories of competition.

  • MSA Environmental Design (MSA Building’s wall design). Out-of-Home & Ambient Media – Out-of-Home – Out-of-Home Campaign
  • BikeShare RGV (logo design for bike sharing program). Elements of Advertising – Visual – Logo Design

4 SILVER

  • We Will Celebrate (ad for the Games of Texas program). Print Advertising – Magazine Advertising – Full Page or Less-Single Unit
  • New Student Orientation (campaign for recruitment and scholarships). Cross Platform – Integrated Campaigns – Consumer – Local
  • South Texas Showdown (athletics logo). Elements of Advertising – Visual –Logo design
  • The Superhero Project (posters for Student Rights and Responsibilities). Elements of Advertising – Visual –Illustration – Series
