Weather concerns prompt UTRGV to move Brownsville outdoor commencement ceremony to McAllen Convention Center

RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS – DEC. 13, 2017 – Due to the threat of inclement weather, Friday’s outdoor commencement ceremony on the UTRGV Brownsville Campus has been moved indoors, to help ensure the safety of the university community and commencement guests.
UTRGV will implement its inclement weather plan, which means the ceremony now will take place Friday at the McAllen Convention Center.

The ceremony will begin at 7 p.m. – an hour later than previously scheduled – to allow extra travel time for those planning to attend.

Tickets are not required to attend the ceremony, but seating is limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Doors will open at 6 p.m.

The ceremony also may be viewed LIVE online at or on the UTRGV Facebook page.

Saturday’s ceremonies will proceed as scheduled: 9 a.m., 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., at the McAllen Convention Center.

For more information and for the latest updates, visit the UTRGV Commencement page.

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 as the first major public university of the 21st century in Texas. This transformative initiative provided the opportunity to expand educational opportunities in the Rio Grande Valley, including a new School of Medicine, and made it possible for residents of the region to benefit from the Permanent University Fund – a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and other institutions.

UTRGV has campuses and off-campus research and teaching sites throughout the Rio Grande Valley including in Boca Chica Beach, Brownsville (formerly The University of Texas at Brownsville campus), Edinburg (formerly The University of Texas-Pan American campus), Harlingen, McAllen, Port Isabel, Rio Grande City, and South Padre Island. UTRGV, a comprehensive academic institution, enrolled its first class in the fall of 2015, and the School of Medicine welcomed its first class in the summer of 2016.
