EDINBURG, TEXAS – AUG. 29, 2016 – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) recently commissioned four cadets and graduating seniors as U.S. Army second lieutenants.

The ceremony was held Aug. 26 on the Edinburg Campus.

In the accompanying photograph, the new second lieutenants (with their majors) are: from left, Jose Martinez III (political science), Jonathan Reyes (criminal justice), Leonardo Rodriguez (general studies), and Crystal Ruiz (biology/pre-med).

The officers were commissioned by Lt. Col. Walter Llamas, professor of military science and UTRGV Battalion commanding officer.

This year is the 100th anniversary year of the ROTC, a program of leadership and military skills training. It prepares students for officer responsibilities in the active Army, Army Reserve, or Army National Guard following graduation or after deferment to attend advanced civilian schooling.

Since its inception at legacy institutions UT Pan American and the University of Texas at Brownsville / Texas Southmost College, and now at UTRGV, the ROTC has commissioned 302 Army officers.
