UTRGV Student Food Pantry to open on Brownsville campus

BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS – NOV. 12, 2015 – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Food Pantry is set to open Nov. 24 on the Brownsville Campus. Its goal is to help students by providing food supplements for those who are having difficulty meeting their basic nutrition needs.

“The food pantry is to help students who are having food insecurities. As long as they are enrolled students, they get food to last about a week,” said Jennifer Cerda, coordinator of the Student Food Pantry Program.

UTRGV students can go to the Food Pantry office if they need help with food.

“Whenever we’re open, they can come in and we have them fill out two forms – a new application and a semester form, to make sure they’re enrolled,” Cerda said.

Students, faculty, staff and the community are encouraged to donate nonperishables to the Student Food Pantry. The food bank accepts donations of nonperishable items and cash donations. For donations of $120.00 or more, a donor may select either a medium length beige apron or a long length black apron.

Foods in demand include canned fruits, vegetables, meats and soups, and nonperishable dried foods such as oatmeal, pancake mix, pasta and rice.

“We want to let everyone know about the food pantry, to let the community know that we’re here so that students don’t have to worry about food, and they’re just focusing on their classes,” Cerda said.

Hours of operation will be from 2-5 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, and from 1-4 p.m. Fridays.
