Before your First Day of Employment

To ensure your employment is processed properly, follow the next steps:

All new Student employees working for UTRGV for the first time or have not worked for UTRGV for the last 6 (six) months, must complete the following electronic documents prior to their first day of work.

  • Criminal Background check- To be completed only if you have received a job offer.

International Student Employees:

For International student being employed, at UTRGV the hiring department must complete a campus employment authorization form for each student. Go to the link below to download the form and instructions:


All  students who are being hired for the first time, or have not been hired for over six months, must complete, sign and return the HR forms to hr@utrgv.edu

Also, complete the two-step I-9 form Online:

Federal law requires new employees of UTRGV to complete the two-step process below, to establish identity and eligibility to work in the United States.

  1. Step One: Employee will need to complete all required fields on the link below:

  1. Step Two: Employee needs to stop by the Office of Human Resources and present original documents to certify the I-9 form previously completed.

Orientation Day

The day is designed to introduce you to UTRGV; acclimate you to the university's culture, mission and values; help you quickly complete operational requirements; and, successfully transition you into your new role.

  • Attend scheduled New Employee Orientation
  • Bring original and unexpired documents for I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification purposes

Day Two & Beyond

We hope you found your orientation valuable and that you are feeling supported and productive in your new role. Orientation isn't over now that you've completed your first day; it is ongoing. There are additional action steps you need to complete as you fully transition into your new role at UTRGV.

You are responsible to complete a timecard to document and submit the total hours worked during a pay period. Click timecard to view Instructions on how to complete your time sheet. Also contact your supervisor for special departmental procedures, account number, etcetera.

Any work performed as student employee at UTRGV requires payment of a minimum wage pay rate of at least $8.00 per hour. This requirement does not apply to work performed on federal grants. Employers (hiring departments) of students who are

performing work on a federal contract in an FLSA non-exempt job title (i.e., a title other than undergraduate Student Assistant, Academic Tutor,  Project Associate, Academic Assistant, Graduate Research Assistant, Assistant Instructor, or Teaching Assistant) may contact or visit Human Resources webpage at: http://www.utrgv.edu/hr/
